Generally, Periodontitis is preceded by Gingivitis. Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue and occurs when plaque and toxins begin to irritate the gums. Gingivitis becomes a more serious issue when the infection colonizes in the gum pockets. Periodontitis is a condition that can lead to serious connective tissue and jawbone issues. Effects of this condition include shifting teeth, loose teeth, and eventual tooth loss.
